The Lorenzo de Armas Family
The 16th Family of the List of Canary Islanders taken at:
Cuautitlán, November 8, 1730, consisting of four single men
from San Sebastián de La Gomera

The Lorenzo de Armas brothers, both single men, along with the Péres brothers, were considered on the November 8th Cuautitlán list as the Sixteenth Family.  They were the sons of Roque Lorenzo de Armas and Teresa de Aviles.  They joined the original group of colonist two days before they sailed from Havana to Vera Cruz.

 

Don Ignacio Lorenzo de Armas, the older of the two brothers, born in San Sebastián de La Gomera, Canary Islands about 1706.  He is described as “about 22 years old, good height, long face, dark complexion, thin nose, black eyes, beard & eyebrows and hair, pitted with the small-pox, several moles between the nose and the left cheek”.  He married Ana Cabrera the daughter of Juan Cabrera and Maria Rodriguez de Bega.  She was born 1717 in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, and died October 10, 1757 in La Villa de San Fernando de Béxar.

 

Ignacio Lorenzo de Armas and Ana Cabrera had 8 children, their daughter Teresa de Armas married Francisco Xavier Peres Casanova in 1770.  He was the son of Jose Antonio Peres, one of the Péres brothers and Paula Granado, who was about 10 years old when she arrived at San Antonio de Béxar.  After his death she married Manuel Berban, from Los Adaes.  He served as a city councilman in 1796 and as an attorney in 1801.

Don Martin Lorenzo de Armas, was born about 1710, also born in San Sebastián on the island of Gomera.  He is described as  "about 20 years old, good height, broad shoulders, flat face, dark complexion, flat nose, long eyebrows, grey eyes, black beard, eyebrows & hair, three moles on the left cheek toward the nose."  He married the widow, Maria Robaina de Bethencourt, whose husband, Juan Rodriguez Granado, had died at Vera Cruz.  They had 4 children.

 

Their daughter, Antonia de Armas married Juan Jose Francisco Padron in La Villa de San Fernando on April 18, 1757.   He was the son of Joseph Padron and Maria Sanabria the Fifth Family.  In turn, their daughter Maria Juana Francisca Padron married 3 times, the last to Francisco Xavier Chaves  about 1786 in La Villa de San Fernando, son of Ignacio Chaves and Gregoria Maese.  He was born 1762 in Atrisco, New Mexico.

 

Martin and his wife lived in the Granado homestead on the plaza.  They had a ranch of one league of land called "San Antonio del Cibolo," and Martin himself, had a rincon or suerte, granted to him as first settler.

 

Martin Lorenzo de Armas along with Juan Curbelo and José Antonio Rodriguez a retired soldier originally from Coahuila ran a pack train between Saltillo and San Antonio de Béxar which provided provisions for the presidio.

 

His will is dated April 6, 1769.  There is a deed of sale dated Feb. 20, 1783, from Antonia Rosalia de Armas, widow, to Pedro Jose Texada, for the portion 7 by 14 vera on the plaza.  There is a will of Gertrudis de Armas, dated Feb. 8, 1802.
